The principle idea of the festival is to raise interest amongst the musicians around the world in their national culture and the music traditions of their own people.

An ancient rock carving of a sun-headed god found in Kazakhstan and worshipped by our ancestors 3 thousand years ago was taken as a basis for the festival logo.

Over the last 14 years representatives from 89 countries around the world participated in the festival.

Performers from 15 countries across the world come to «Medeu» on this occasion. There is such great interest in this innovative event that many pop stars want to participate in the contest. But the International Jury doesn't take into consideration either known names or previous achievements.

«Azia Dauysy» becomes a member of FIDOF. 25 contestants compete for the awards this time. Many applied to enter the contest for a number of years before they appeared on the stage for the first time. The contest sets high standards for entry by which it has gained a high reputation. It has its own concept in music and though it was advised many times to change it and become either pure folk or pure pop, the organizers were confident that there is «a golden centre», and only the most talented and creative can sense this.

The contest celebrates its jubilee- 5 years. There is a unique TV bridge between the audience at the «Medeu» stadium and a spaceship with a Russia-Kazakstan crew on board, whilst here on earth the «Yalla» band, Al Bano and Romina Power, Laima Vaikule, Dmitry Malikov, Larissa Dolina and Haddaway celebrated the Festival.

The year of Abai's 150th Anniversary - and one of the festival's days is devoted to the great writer. Abai's songs are sung in Kazakh, Russian, Ukrainian and the Chinese languages.

«Azia Dauysy» is awarded with the FIDOF Award of Honour «For the significant contribution to the development of musical culture".

Now it is not merely a contest, but a true festival featuring not only International and contemporary Kazakhstan song contests but also "The Queen of "Azia Dauysy" competition.

There is a special event this year - a celebration of the living legend of our culture, the singer Roza Baglanova. The company "Aya" stages a large scale firework festival. The festival takes place in the Summer Theatre in the City Park .

FIDOF declares "Azia Dauysy" as "The Festival of the Year 1997".

FIDOF also presents the Festival with «The Mass Media - Ring of Friendship" award. This award means that «Azia Dauysy» attracts strong attention from many journalists and makes extensive TV and radio head lines.

The10th jubilee festival brings some new features: a children's art festival, a young fashion designers' competition, a "Colours of Asia" painting exhibition and fair. The brightest surprise of the festival is the " Salem , Kazakhstan !" show at which "Azia Dauysy" previous years' foreign prize-winners sing Kazakhstan popular songs in Kazakh. The 4th contemporary Kazakhstan song competition is held.

The 5 th contemporary Kazakhstan song contest selects the 7 best songs of 2000. For the second time a children's art festival and a young fashion designers' competition "21 st Century" are held.

The 8 th contemporary Kazakhstan song contest takes place.
